Yahoo! Publisher (alternative to Google Adsense)

Posted in General, Other Money Makers at 8:00 am by a writer

Yahoo! has been trying to catch up to Google for sometime now, specifically in the area of advertising revenue. CWire recently gave the Yahoo! publisher contextual link platform a try on our site. This platform has some interesting features that may give Google a run for their money and is an excellent alternative to Adsense for monetizing your website or blog.

The Yahoo! Publisher platform gets a 10 for ease of use. That along with the ability to use other publisher interfaces is a major plus for blogs like CWire. For example, you can easily submit your website for inclusion into Yahoo!’s search engine and you can also easily submit your feed for inclusion in their RSS feed directories. These tools are all under the heading “Drive Traffic” - you cant beat that!

Yahoo Publisher vs. Google Adsense Summary

For Publishers: The only downside to Yahoo! publisher is that there are simply not as many advertisers as there are on the Google Adwords platform (which means that ads may not be as relevant to your pages). However, several anecdotal studies by blogs have show that the payouts are competitive to Adsense.
For Advertisers: The flip side to the above, is it may create a buying opportunity if you are looking to advertise your site or service via purchasing keywords. In fact, Yahoo is currently offering advertisers a $25 credit just for signing up. If you have ever thought about buying keywords before, this may be the time to do it - or at least give it a shot!

Note: Do not use BOTH Adsense and Yahoo Publisher on the same pages of your site/blog. Their terms of use strictly forbid this!

Yahoo Publisher is terrible…I was a beta tester, and now as then, it is hopeless….Case and point, Cyberwyre’s own thoughts here that the ads aren’t as relevant. If ads aren’t relevant do people click on them? If they dont click on them how can it be comparative to google adsense’s more relevant ads….As for your CJ affiliate link imbedded in the story to the Yahoo Publisher program, has this blog gone to the softsell now to make money off affiliate programs rather than being truly informative?
What happened-

what’s wrong with trying to monetize? If you like and appreciate all this free advice… I don’t see the problem with their aff link inclusion.

Yahoo! Publisher is still only open to U.S. residents. IMO, this is one of the main aspects keeping them from competing with Google.

Also, CyberWyre folks, any reason your RSS feed is partial? That’s so 2006.

As we stated in our post, several anecdotal studies have shown that Yahoo Publisher earns similar payouts even though it may receive lower click through rates due to the less relevant ads. Here is one example. What was so terrible about your experience with Yahoo Publisher? Surely since Beta test time they have improved the service.

See another recent example (April 2007) of a test that indicated that CTR’s between Publisher and Adsense were very similar. We are simply reporting on the fact that we have implemented Yahoo Publisher on CWire and have experienced positive results. Feel free to contact us with your experiences. We will continue to link to relevant affiliate programs as we have since we started this blog.

Is Yahoo out of beta now? Their site says “Interested in participating in the Yahoo! Publisher Network Beta?”

I applied some number of months ago but my site was denied. Not sure why. Any thoughts on how to increase the chances that your site will be approved?

YPN only targeting for website with content in English, which is a big drawback for international users.

I imagine the people who bought cwire bought it with 1 thing in mind, to make more money than they paid for it. New owners, new ideas, I’m going to give it a chance.

My experience with YPN was less than spectacular too. I only used it on 2 sites, but neither converted anywhere near what Adsense did. Early on they paid out higher on a per click basis (limited publishers?) but that has changed. If the ads aren’t targeted, they simply won’t be clicked.

My hesitation with YPN is that they have a much smaller advertiser base than Google today, so I don’t see how they could generate as relevant of ads and ads at as high of a cost per click ad Google.

Yahoo has a few things that Google does not also. But Yahoo remains to have a serious issue with letting new affiliate join. Google on the other hand does and has taken almost all comers.

To be honest I think if Yahoo opened up a bit more and was less stingy in taking new sites on. Yahoo would probably drive the actual search volume and new advertisers up by it. Just as Google used adsense to brand ‘GOOGLE’ into everyones head as they surf every site online.

A highly recommended site is elfingo.com for online auctions. They are the new ebay. Many smaller sites like this offer buyers far better deals than ebay ever could. Buyser also save a ton because this site charges little or nothing depending on the day. One more reaso I like elfingo.com is because they don’t take a part of the sale at all. No commissions or final value fees. A+++ http://www.elfingo.com

If yahoo or MS wants to play on Internet area, they should learn the game of advertising; because now everybody can easily become both seller or buyer. In the future, the concept of advertisement will totally change, maybe it already has changed.

Yahoo is only good if your in the US. Also, they seem to be throwing a lot of publishers off the program for what they call ‘MFA’ sites and that includes ones that Google have deemd ok. Still, I’d have both adsense and Yahoo and experiment to see what works best for you.

I actually got nailed by Yahoo for having Adsense ads on a site that also had their ads. It wasn’t even intentional, but they didn’t believe me. I had a small google ad at the far bottom of one page, and everything else was Yahoo ads.

Oh well… the site (and that yahoo account) weren’t money makers anyways.

having your kid disappear is every parent’s worst nightmare…for these people it came true. They did something dumb, that probably lots of people do but they paid the ultimate price. its worse than having a kid die..not knowing where they are or what is happening to them…they have my sympathy.

Has anyone out there heard about WideCircles.com. It seems like a way better service then wasting money on PPC. Apparently they are using refering websites ( forums, blogs, wiki, etc. ) and have a viral word of mouth distributed approach to it. My friend told me he got around 100 visits from single post which cost him $0.40c. I am going to give them a try today . In case you are intrested here is it.http://widecircles.co m?s=imt1

I work for a company that manages PPC accounts for lawyers. We use both Yahoo and Google. Honestly, Yahoo isn’t bad but it doesn’t send the same amount of traffic and the traffic does not convert as well. With that said, I’ll probably open and account an get a free $25, I never turn down free money ;-)

I’ve never really thought Google Adsense or any other contextual based advertising system delivers nearly as well as highly targeted affiliate traffic. If you’ve picked a good niche (which every expert suggests), then you shouldn’t have a hard time delivering your traffic to good affiliate programs. I just hate wasting the screen space on google or yahoo ads that more and more users are probably becoming ad-blind to.

Comment by Komodo Dragon
2008-06-06 15:24:42

Thats true Jamie, but doesn’t it also depends on the niche? Some niches users are very blind to ads. But other niches, users don’t have a clue!

I am not sure if Yahoo! Publisher has gained enough of a market share to be known by enough individuals. Google Adsense has become the generically well-known advertising setup that people are able to use on any type of site.
