Fighting Contact Form Spam

Posted in Blogging for Profit at 6:15 pm by admin

It seems that every day, I get two more spam messages from the CyberWyre contact form than the day before. I’m now at a rate of about one every two minutes. I had to put this to an end, and just inserted a contact form with a CAPTCHA test to reduce the spam to hopefully zero.

The contact form that I’m using is the Dagon Design Form Mailer, which so far seems to be working. No spam yet! If you’re suffering from contact form spam as I was, I’d highly recommend checking it out, and installing it or a similar script.

It’s a nice idea, will be interesting to see how it affects your genuine contact requests though?

I don’t think that it should, since anyone legitimately contacting me won’t mind filling out a few extra characters.

I agree. Shouldn’t be a problem for users.

I have luckily only seen problems with spam in the comments to my articles. That was easily correct since it was only coming from a handful of sources.

I have never seen any of these malicious content spam messages when reading your posts. Before you implemented this, were you just deleting them that frequently? If so, that must have been a lot of work!

@ Buy - he was referring to the contact form, not the comment section.

I use that same exact form, and I just got it last week. I had one earlier but it wasn’t sending out the messages for some reason. Dagon has some really good tools!

Great..
Ive seen many which have simpler challenges like “2+3=” .. Visitors generally find it frustrating to enter the captcha according to a recent survey. But since it’s a contact form, i guess it’s not a concern.

After filling out so many of these forms, I think it would be a neat option to allow commentators to bypass this option if they have previously left a comment. I don’t know how to write the code for it though, cause I’m not a coder! But it’s be a cool idea.

I’m amazed at how well this site performs and it hasn’t been updated in a while. I bet most of the traffic goes to those ‘programs’ like the website value calculator and Google search tools.

I’ve been wondering the same thing. No updates in over a month but still getting plenty of hits and probably making good money.

Captchas are great for stopping spam. You should use them on this blog to, I see that some of the “top commenters” on your sidebar are not the best sites to link out to. Well written post though.

I use logical questions and answers for all my forms. Eg, what is fastest? Rocket, snail or a boat? You just answer in the captcha field.

I didn’t use Captcha before but know I understand that this helps people protect their sites from trash.
